Rosseti Group recorded damages of 1.3 billion rubles (14.2 million USD) from illegal cryptocurrency mining operations in 2024, with major losses occurring primarily in the North Caucasus, totaling over 600 million rubles.
A significant illegal mining operation was found in Novosibirsk, where approximately 3,200 devices contributed to losses estimated at 197 million rubles (2.2 million USD). The power company also reported halting 130 unauthorized connections.
In response to these issues, Russian authorities implemented seasonal bans on crypto mining from November 15 to March 15 until 2031 and announced plans for a mandatory registry for mining equipment by the Ministry of Energy.
