South African authorities arrested the 35-year-old in Johannesburg for alleged support of terrorist activities via Bitcoin. The arrest comes after he reportedly violated the Protection of Constitutional Democracy and Related Activities Act.
Investigations started in May 2018 when suspicious activities were detected. The suspect transferred 11,500 ZAR into Bitcoin through Luno, then to a wallet linked to a separate organization. These transactions suggested financial support for foreign criminal enterprises.
On October 24, law enforcement raided the suspect’s residence, seizing firearms. Authorities are partnering with national and international agencies to curtail illegal funding of organized crime and terrorism. The case will be heard on January 6 in Lichtenburg Magistrate’s Court.
