Thailand has begun testing BTC payments in Phuket to make transactions easier for foreign tourists. The program allows tourists to register BTC, convert it to Thai baht, and use it seamlessly. Announced during a seminar, it marks Thailand’s first state-backed initiative in the tourism sector, promising simpler transactions for visitors.

Foreign tourists must register BTC through a local Thai exchange and complete identity verification to participate. A clearing house will convert BTC payments into Thai baht, which minimizes the volatility risk for local businesses. This system assures businesses and tourists a smooth transaction process, promoting BTC use in the tourism industry.

The pilot program offers a legal alternative to cash, enhancing Thailand’s tourism appeal by simplifying transactions. With existing crypto adoption, such as in Kalasin’s “Bitcoin town”, where over 80 businesses accept BTC, this initiative indicates further integration into Thailand’s economy, providing tourists with varied payment options.
